The historic City of York will host a number of events during National Interfaith Week, each inviting you to discover more about our diverse and vibrant faith communities, beliefs, traditions, values and contributions to 21st Century York life.
This year's theme is 'Unity – We are all on a Journey’.

Important information | Sat 9th Nov 9 am to 10 am – Interfaith Unity Breakfast: An opportunity to gather at the start of our Interfaith week journey to enjoy each other’s company, feel unified & connected as we sit & chat together over a simple breakfast at CJCLDS (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Acomb). All Welcome. Please book your free place by contacting psiddall2020@gmail.com no later than Tuesday 5th November This event is fully accessible. 10.30am to 1.30 pm approx. York Interfaith ‘Tree Loving Care’ event near Clifton Bridge area. Members & friends will be weeding, planting, litter picking & clearing the Interfaith tree plots. All welcome. This event is not easily accessed. 4pm to 8.30pm Diwali Celebration organised by the Hindu & Sikh Faith Advisors from the University of York St John. There will be performers and activities followed by an Indian meal. Sun 10th Nov - Remembrance Day services where Representatives from Faith Groups within the city attend the York Parade, Service and Laying of Wreaths at the War Memorial. Mon 11th Nov 6 to 7pm ‘Paganism: One Tribe’ a talk by members of Kith of the Earthen Star, the Pagan group in York at the Black Swan Inn, Peasholme Green. Followed by their annual Pre-Yule Bazaar 7-10pm. The talk is in person on the ground floor and also on zoom. N.B. The Bazaar is in the Wolfe Room upstairs and not easily accessible for those with mobility problems. Parking in the pub’s car park or near Foss Islands. Two short online talks about the work of Interfaith work in schools and Religious Education within the curriculum in schools. To obtain the Zoom link please email deeboyle@gn.apc.org 5pm – 6,30pm Circle of Light and Friendship on Campus on Tuesday, Thursday & Friday. These events are organised by the university of York Chaplaincy in partnership with York St John and include different faith leaders sharing aspects of their faiths. Following this, there will be light refreshments and opportunities to speak informally. Please note venue changes (see below), No booking required. Ground floor is accessible. 1pm to 3pm Creating Interfaith Tree Decorations at the Unitarian Chapel in St Saviourgate, York. Once again, we are taking part in the Christmas Tree Festival at York Minster that takes place in December. Fri 15th Nov 10am to 11.30 Bahai ‘Unity’ Craft Activity at Tang Hall Explore Library, The Centre @ Burnholme, Mossdale Ave., Tang Hall, York YO31 0HA. Suits all ages. Contact yorkbahais@gmail.com Sat 16th Nov. 10am-12.30pm – Stories from our Faiths at the York Central Library / York Explore where simple short stories from different faiths will be read to children. Refreshments available in their café. At the same time there will also be a new event, A Human Library where people can ‘borrow’ a human book to talk to them about their faith for up to 30mins. You can book up for these before the day. Contact deeboyle@gn.apc.org The ground floor of the library is accessible for all. 2pm Friends Meeting House On this Shabbat, (sabbath day), Jewish communities read the stories of Sarah and Hagar., those intertwined lives of the wives of Abraham. We often think of them as rivals, unhappy with one another, and Sarah as imperiously banishing Hagar. There are indeed tearful moments! Come for a more nuanced look at the stresses of family life, and two poignant stories of love, loss and hope. Followed by a short prayer service and some traditional Jewish bread (challah). Sun 17th Nov 11am – ‘Unity’ An Interfaith Service to include contributions from the different faiths. There will be a zoom option for the service for those who can’t be there in person. Please contact York Unitarians on yorkunitarians@gmail.com for the link. This is followed by a shared lunch at 12pm at the Unitarian Chapel, St Saviourgate. Lunch is a ‘bring & share’ vegetarian one so if you are able to bring food items along, please do so before the service starts. Everyone most welcome. Ground floor fully accessible. 3pm – 5pm: 35th York Interfaith 35th Anniversary Celebration Hosted at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, West Bank, Acomb, YO24 4ES. Venue is fully accessible. Please join us for our closing event to celebrate and reflect on our 35th year of the York Interfaith Group. Please bring a few cakes to share.
